These Handmade Positive Energy Lamps are an example of a symbiotic adventure between living elephants and humans. I wanted to share this story as a woman in support of other innovative women. This attractive paper lamp is handmade by artisans in a small collective in Northern Thailand. The fibrous paper is made from the elephant’s droppings! Caring for rescued elephants is not an easy thing to do but a group of ladies have figured out a way to support their families and help rescue elephants by using their droppings. First the elephant poo is slowly boiled (for 24 hours) before being dried in Thailand’s tropical sunshine for a couple of days. It is then scooped up and soaked in clean water before being screened out and dried again resulting in a sheet of handmade paper. Elephants only eat leaves and grasses that are then digested and processed into a smooth piece of paper that is unique and has a useful purpose in supporting women in a cottage industry and the Elephant herself.
